| Beautiful blond actress who alter nated conventional ingenue roles with daring performances and offbeat characterizations in controversial projects. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and made her screen debut opposite old pros Alec Guinness and John Mills in Tunes of Glory (1960). She proved herself a competent screen actress with her supporting role in John Huston's Freud (1962), and her career gained momentum following her turn as the delicious object of Albert Finney's obsession in Tom Jones (1963). York raised eyebrows and attracted censorial ire for her nude lesbian scene in The Killing of Sister George (1968), and followed that performance with a supporting role in the harrowing They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), for which she was Oscarnominated as Best Supporting Actress. In 1972 she won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her role in Robert Altman's Images (based on a story she'd written), in which she played a disturbed author of children's books living in rural Scotland. This role had much resonance for York, as she had grown up in such a rural locale and would one day become a successful author of children's books herself. Since the 1970s York has divided her time between small, serious pictures (The Shout, The Silent Partner both 1978) and more mainstream fare, such as the Superman series, in which she's played Kal-El's mother (1978, 1980, and a voice only in 1987). She cowrote and appeared briefly in the modest and unmemorable Falling in Love Again (1980).
