Prodigiously talented actress whose stardom has never interfered with her personal integrity. She left the South to attend Sarah Lawrence College, and studied theater at the Actors Studio in New York. She was working on stage when she landed her first film role in Count Three and Pray (1955, registering solidly as a strongwilled orphan). Touted by 20th CenturyFox as an exciting new star, she played one of the sisters in A Kiss Before Dying (1956), a well-done adaptation of Ira Levin's thriller. From there she went to The Three Faces of Eve (1957), for which she won a Best Actress Oscar as a woman with multiple personalities. Woodward first teamed with her husband, Paul Newman, in the steamy adaptation of William Faulkner's The Long Hot Summer (1958). Since then they have worked together frequently, costarring in Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! (also 1958), From the Terrace (1960), Paris Blues (1961), A New Kind of Love (1963), Winning (1969), WUSA (1970), The Drowning Pool (1976), Harry and Son (1984), and one of their richest dual vehicles, Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (1990), for which she earned an Oscar nomination. Newman has also directed her in some of her strongest parts, including Rachel, Rachel (1968, which earned her an Oscar nomination as a spinster schoolteacher), The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972), the telefilm The Shadow Box (1980), and The Glass Menagerie (1987). She also earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a frigid woman coming to terms with herself in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams (1973). Woodward, like many mature actresses, has found few worthy roles in feature films in recent years, but has been very active in high-quality made-for-TV movies, including Sybil (1976), in which, re versing roles from her star-making Three Faces of Eve she played the psychiatrist to Sally Field, a victim of multiple personalities, See How She Runs (1978), for which she won an Emmy as a middleaged housewife who decides to run in the Boston marathon, and Do You Remember Love (1985), the moving story of a couple coping with Alzheimer's disease, which won her another Emmy Award.
