A beautiful young woman wearing only a black cloak, boots and a belt walks slowly through a mist-enshrouded forest. The camera pans up and down her body, lovingly inspecting every inch of her. That beautiful woman is of course Lina Romay. And with an opening like that, the film could only be from the Franco oeuvre. At once a touching paean to immortality and quite possibly a parody of "art cinema", Female Vampire is one of the director's quintessential efforts.
Romay plays Irina Karlstein, a vampiric mute and last descendant of the Karlstein family, living and feeding (though, in at least half of the various variants the film is available in, not as we would expect a vampire to normally "feed"!) on the Mediterranean island of Madeira. Irina is soon under the watchful gaze of two people, one, a young journalist Anna (Watican), intent on penning a story on the Karlstein dynasty, the other, an unnamed poet (Taylor) whose intentions are both pretentiously existential and obsessively sexual.
Female Vampire is frustrating, but to the patient viewer, it is also highly rewarding. Its extraordinarily languid pace perfectly mirrors the lethargic pace of Irina's immortal existence and the eternal ennui, which lies therein. Romay's performance (and more so Franco's casting of the young beauty) in this role is wonderful to watch, betraying virtually no emotion whatsoever even during her many moments of heightened ecstasy as she drains her victims of their literal (via the sexual) "life force". She is the embodiment of a soul-less, living dead vessel.
As well as pulling off the face of immortality, Romay also brings incredible eroticism and humanity to the role of Irina. Her attacks on various male
