Janine Theriault was leading with her belly, courtesy of a prosthetic twin pregnancy form beneath her costume. But the actress who plays a mother of many in the Canadian TV movie The Stork Derby is truly carrying a double load these days. Theriault, 26, has been commuting between The Stork Derby, before the cameras here, and the feature film Owning Mahowny, shooting in Toronto. Montreal puts her in the 1930s, elegant blonde waves and a demure, ladylike wardrobe, despite that lentil-filled late-term mommy tummy. For Toronto takes, it's all red hair, big shoulders and 1980s attitude. Too many airplanes and too little sleep had Theriault sniffling through a sinus blockage on the Stork Derby set inside the former Guaranteed Milk factory downtown. "I don't know if I just have a good imagination or if the pregnancy suit is just very well built. It has padding everywhere. It's heavy, so you just kind of naturally have to move that way," she said of her convincing waddle. Her character, Colleen Grant, is the youngest, most glamorous and ultimately most controversial of the "Derby" mothers competing to have the most children in 10 years in order to claim a $1-million bequest from an eccentric Toronto millionaire. The outlandish but true story of poverty-inspired desperation and media sensationalism stars Megan Follows, R.H. Thomson, Eric Peterson and John Neville and is being directed by Mario Azzopardi. It premieres on CITY-TV this fall. Colleen becomes a source of scandal because some of her children are illegitimate. "My take on her is that she has these wonderful ambitions. She knew that she was attractive to men and she initially thinks she's going to be a fabulous woman," Theriault said. "All it takes is a little downturn in the economy and suddenly anyone who is not Anglo-Saxon and white with a penis is suspect. There's really not a whole lot of it that's changed. We're still dealing with the same issues. When times are getting tough, society will always look for scapegoats, always." Owning Mahowny is also about the lengths some people will go to for money. It's based on the Gary Ross book Stung: The Incredible Obsession Of Brian Molony, about a Toronto bank manager who embezzled millions to support his gambling addiction. Theriault plays the best friend of the girlfriend (Minnie Driver) of the banker (Philip Seymour Hoffman). "My character's the cruelest, most worldly character in the film and she thinks they're all ridiculous. She has to spend time with them so that she can feel superior," she said. "It's got a lot of humour in it. Maybe some of the kind of humour that the Coen brothers had in Fargo, that film with the pregnant cop. Minus the grotesque element. Nobody goes into the woodchipper." Back in Toronto, where she's based, Theriault is also a member of the rep company of the series Nero Wolfe, which premieres on A&E April 22.
