| Only 25 years old when tapped to play one of the praiseworthy subjects in 1978's In Praise of Older Women (for which she received glowing reviews), this striking actress hasn't been blessed with many similarly showy roles (though she was in one certified hit, 1979's The Amityville Horror Other films include Shoot (1976), Outrageous!, Starship Invasions, Who Has Seen the Wind (all 1977), High-Ballin' (1978), Harry Tracy, Desperado (1982), The Osterman Weekend (1983), The Land Before Time (1988, voice only), and Innocent Victim (1989). Writer-producer Larry Gelbart cast her opposite Beau Bridges in his prestigious TV series "United States" (1980), but it met an early demise. (So did her solo dramatic series "Jessica Novak" in 1981.) Occasionally a good part, like that of a repressed teacher who discovers her true sexuality in Desert Hearts (1985), or a long-suffering, compassionate cohort to Paul Newman in The Color of Money (1986), has come along. But Shaver's been handed more than her share of colorless or thankless parts, including those in the comedy bomb Best Defense (1984) and the grisly horror vehicle The Believers (1987). Recently seen in Dr. Bethune (1989), Zebrahead (1992), That Night and Morning Glory (both 1993) as well as a variety of TV movies. |
