Sonia Rolland was born in Kigali, Rwanda on February 11, 1981 " I had eight years and half when we had to leave Rwanda, my parents, my brother and me. We left for security reasons: my mother is Tutsi, and we were afraid... After a few months in France, we returned to Africa, in Burundi, where my father managed a printing works. I remember Burundi, and Bujumbura, the capital, where we lived. But my links with my native land are not broken. For example, I speak to kinyarwanda with my mother... even if I answer her rather in French, because she is making fun of my accent · In Bujumbura, I carried out a very simple life of a small schoolgirl, a little real tomboy, who adored to play football in front of the house with the children from neighborhood. I was not really interested in female things (fashion). In Burundi it was different than in France: although I have a French dad and a Rwandan mother nobody asked me any question. It was common thing to be from mixed family. It was later, when we arrived in France, that the things were complicated, that I had integration difficulties." Rolland Sonia proved to be very strong personality. First she was elected Miss Burgundy " I was very proud of my success. And I said myself that I would go to the contest for Miss France to show at which point Burgundy is opened with the mixtures of the cultures. To present the richness of the interbreeding: to have two bloods which run in my veins, to have two cultures, and to take best of each one." It was on 11th December 1999 when she was elected. In front of their TV sets,, more than 10 million televiewers admired tall and brown girl crowned at the end of the ceremony. This coronation transformed a pretty young lady into ambassadress of France of the charm, beauty and elegance. And after that, she was elected Miss France 2000. Miss France 2000 wants to dedicate herself to the service of beauty and elegance, but also to the combat against the wars, racism, and poverty. |
