| Pouty redhead who endeared herself to movie audiences in several "Brat Pack" films written by John Hughes: Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Pretty in Pink (1986). Ringwald has shown real ability and forthrightness, beginning with her debut performance in Tempest (1982), and continuing right on through Betsy's Wedding (1990). Hughes wrote the part that, to date, has best suited her: the lowerclass daughter of Harry Dean Stanton who simultaneously anticipates and dreads her date with one of her better-heeled classmates in Pretty in Pink. She made the cover of "Time" magazine, and was emblematic of a new generation on screen; then her career fizzled. Bad choices and bad luck seem to have conspired against this once promising young talent. Her most recent credits have been telefilms and miniseries, including Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994). She's the daughter of blind jazz musician Bob Ringwald, with whom she was performing while still a preschooler. Trivia: Judged the Tropfest film festival 2000 in Australia. Family: dad, Bob; mom, Adele; older sister, Beth; older brother, Kelly. Molly's first acting break was as Kate in the West Coast production of "Annie". Listed as one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1984" in John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 36. Is fluent in French. Former Brat-Packer. Turned down the Julia Roberts role in Pretty Woman (1990) Refused the Lea Thompson role in Some Kind of Wonderful, ending her successful business relationship with John Hughes, who was furious. Her parents owned a cafeteria in Downtown Los Angeles Briefly dated Anthony Michael Hall David Lynch sent Molly Ringwald the screenplay of Blue Velvet, in the hope that she would be interested in playing the role of Sandy, which was eventually played by Laura Dern. However, Molly's mother read it first and because it disturbed her, she never showed it to Molly for consideration. |
