| In 1999, Eurovision fans were divided. Charlotte Nilsson had triumphed in Israel for Sweden with 'Take Me To Your Heaven'. Some loved the song, some hated it, but one thing they couldn't deny is that the girl had a good pair of lungs on her. Nilsson is still just in her mid twenties, yet already has been in the public eye for what seems like forever in her native Sweden. She has sung in musicals, been a frequent face on Swedish TV, modelled clothes for fashion houses and has lead her own band. Now as the Eurovision 2001 season gets into gear, she is back with a new single, 'You got me going crazy', set to give her another hit across many European territories. Just last year the newspapers in Sweden were reporting that Charlotte had fallen out with Swedish Television and would not be handing over the trophy to the winning act, as had been expected. Her reported refusal to just be 'a flower girl' was jumped upon by Swedish tabloid writers, who had always seen her as fair game. Nilsson however just ignored the storm they were trying to whip up and carried on promoting her first English language Solo album around the world. She explains, "I really would have liked to have been there, but I was doing a tour then and it wasn't possible to come home just to hand over a trophy." The press fascination however doesn't show any signs of waning. She is still the subject of many a story in her native Sweden. "Hmmm...I've been reading a lot of things about me in the last year, but one strikes me as being particularly funny...I am supposed to be dating Prince Albert from Monaco." Although Eurovision has been undoubtedly a good step up for Charlotte, she admits that she probably wouldn't enter again after having won in 1999. She is however pleased that she is invited along to national finals, this year she hopes to appear at the final in Spain. Since then however, Charlotte has been very busy, we wondered what she has been up to and what has happened to her since then, "A lot...I have recorded two albums, done a lot of promotion in several countries. I have just released a new single from my forthcoming (second) album. That album, Miss Jealousy, should be out towards the end of March." The second album represents a change musically for Charlotte, moving more into mainstream pop and dance music, but that's not all that's changed, she has also changed the way she looks! "I have a new image, it's true......I'm not blond anymore!! It's a new sound as well, more pop". She is moving away from the type of music that people have associated with her previously, particularly in Sweden where she was often seen as the voice of 'dansband'. She adds, "I hope that people like my new album, that they give it a chance and of course I would like to do a tour in Europe and meet my fans again." Charlotte Nilsson is curently touring Sweden ahead of the release of her new single and album. |
