| An exceptionally talented leading lady who specializes in intelligent, strong-willed characters, Jackson belongs to that select sorority of top screen actresses who achieved stardom by virtue of expert performances and force of personality rather than physical attributes. Like many actresses of her day, Jackson left school at a young age to try her hand at the theater; years of waitressing and other menial jobs followed. She was discovered by director Peter Brook in 1964, who cast her in his stage play "MaratSade (Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade)" as the assassin Charlotte Corday, a role she reprised in the 1966 film version, garnering some good notices. (She'd made her film debut in 1963's This Sporting Life. A favorite of British director Ken Russell, Jackson won her first Best Actress Oscar for her sparkling stint in his D. H. Lawrence adaptation Women in Love (1969). She subsequently appeared in Russell's The Boy Friend(in a very amusing cameo), The Music Lovers (both 1971), Salome's Last Dance (1988), and The Rainbow (1989, as the mother of the character she played in Women in Love In her peak period, the 1970s, Jackson was Oscar-nominated for her performances in Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971), the romantic comedy A Touch of Class (1973, for which she won her second Academy Award), and Hedda (1975). Frequently seen in period productions such as The Incredible Sarah (1976, as legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt), she is equally at home in contemporary dramas and comedies like The Romantic Englishwoman (1975). In 1971 she won an Emmy Award for her dazzling performance in the British miniseries "Elizabeth R," which aired in the U.S. on "Masterpiece Theatre." She has made occasional television appearances since then, in such high-profile TV movies as The Patricia Neal Story (1981) and A Murder of Quality (1991). In 1990 she mounted an unsuccessful campaign to run for Parliament, as a member of the Labour Party; she ran again in 1992 and won. The political world's gain is our loss. |
